Francesca Gambarotto is professor of Applied Economics at the FISPPA Department, University of Padova. She teaches circular economy for local development, regional economics and economics of innovation.
Her main research interests are in sustainable territorial development through the analysis of circular economy, firms’ innovation processes and decision-makers polity. Using the variety of capitalism framework, she analyses regional disparities and problems of economic periferization.
Recently, she was visiting scholar at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy in Germany.
Her research interests are in two interconnected areas: the first is aimed at investigating territorial economic development with respect to social and environmental sustainability. The transition from linear to circular economic organisation depends on the ability of enterprises to redesign production processes and business models. The challenge for productive activities is to start from value systems and decision-making processes based on the assumption of sustainability of the economic system, in other words to learn to organise economic choices and actions within the constraints of social and environmental reproducibility. The second research topic related to the above attempts to answer the question: what guides the choices of economic agents in this new scenario of economic development? What are the expected changes in decision-making processes (value system, behaviour, incentives, rewards, sanctions)?
She has published on these issues in the journals Sustainability and Journal of Cleaner Production and she is involved in European projects on these topics.
She has served as president of the Galileo Science and Technology Park in Padua and am currently a member of the Technical Strategy Committee of the regional agency Veneto Innovazione and of the Scientific Committee of NIM, the data platform for innovation in the North East.
