Alessandro Mongili is Professor of General Sociology at the School of Psychology and of Modernization Processes and Technoscience at the School of Human Sciences, University of Padua.
His research interests include design and development in computer science, innovation in areas labeled “backward” and standardization of minority languages.
He received his doctorate in sociology from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris.
He worked at the University of Cagliari, where he taught General Sociology and Sociology of Technology at the Faculty of Political Science. He was a visiting fellow at the USSR Academy of Sciences (1987-1988), the Universities of California at San Diego (2004) and Berkeley (2011), Santa Clara University (2007) and Stanford University (2008).
He first devoted himself to research on Soviet science (La chute de l’U.R.S.S. et la recherche scientifique,1998) and then to technology and information technology (Women at the Computer, with C. Casula, 2006, Technology and Society, 2007, Information Infrastructure(s), with G. Pellegrino, 2014) and to the problems of innovation in areas labeled “backward” (Postcolonial Topologies, 2015).
He is the author of several essays. In 1995 he published Stalin and the Soviet Empire, translated into two other languages. He was among the founders and the first president of the Italian Society for Science and Technology Studies (STS Italia).
